But it sucks infinitely more when you’re trying to do your job as a commercial pilot. Matthew Guest had worked for Flybe as a pilot for nearly a decade. Then he started experiencing panic attacks in 2014. The reason? He developed a fear of flying. Bombardier Q400 (Image courtesy: Vanwageningen.net A pilot who was afraid of flying. (Not quite.) What kind of a pilot dreads flying? That sounds almost too funny to be true. But it’s only funny until you hear the whole story. Then it becomes almost moving. Matthew Guest joined Flybe, a UK-based low-cost carrier, in 2007. At first, he flew Bombardier Q400 and everything seemed to go well. But then he got promoted. And as part of that promotion, he was asked to fly longer flights on somewhat larger Embraer jets. This triggered his phobia of long-distance flights and being trapped on the airplane. Over the next three years, Guest started experiencing feelings of dread, dizziness and other physical pains. His doctor even suspended Guest’s license to fly while he recovered from his anxiety. But then, after a leave of absence and therapy, he returned to work at Flybe in 2016. Guest’s anxiety didn’t wait long to reappear. A pilot who got fired. The thing is- Guest didn’t have issues with flying per se. It was just long flights that triggered his anxiety. After he had returned, Guest was assigned a four hour long route to Greece. He tried to communicate his concerns to his superiors, but without success. He was simply told to read a book or do a crossword while the plane was cruising (as pilots frequently do). Ultimately, Guest had to call sick to avoid piloting the aircraft. Flybe considered this unacceptable and decided to fire Guest. The company expressed concerns about Guest’s “fitness to safely fly” and was “not prepared to take risks in the flight deck with people’s lives” (The Telegraph). A pilot who sued the airline. Flybe stated that Guest was offered a ground based role as Flight Safety Support Officer. If he accepted it, however, there would be no possibility of returning to flying for him. Despite everything, Guest obviously loved his job and wasn’t ready to give up flying entirely. He decided to sue the airline, claiming unfair dismissal. Embraer 195 jet (Image courtesy: Business Traveller) A pilot who won an unfair dismissal claim and got his job back. In the end, Matthew Guest won his job back. The judge based his decision on the fact that Guest had never been given the opportunity to meet the person who made the decision to fire him. He noted, “It is a basic principle of natural justice and of fairness that an employee should have the chance to address the relevant decision-maker. Here, the claimant had no such opportunity” (The Telegraph) Ultimately, the ruling was that Guest can return to flying the Q400, which he had flown safely for years, or be allowed to fly for a time with an extra pilot. Happy ending? Somewhat ironically, the airline has recently announced it would return all of its Embraer 195 jets. Why? An internal review had concluded that Bombardier Q400, the same plane Mr Guest preferred flying, “is the best core aircraft for its current and future needs.” It looks like Guest won’t be forced to fly anything but his trusty Bombardier anytime soon. Remember, depending on the size of the company and the scope of the job, your second interview may just be the next step. Please let me know what days and times you are available for the next two weeks.We look forward to meeting with you again.Best,Jason Turner Expand What to Expect at a Second Interview Getting the email invitation is a great next step, but it does not mean the job is yours. At this point, they have likely narrowed down the applicant pool, from the dozens who applied, to just a handful who successfully made it through the first round. This time you will be up against the most highly qualified candidates, so its important to remain focused and not get overly confident. Many people mistakenly think a second interview is more casual than the first. This is simply not the case unless it was specifically stated by the hiring manager or human resources contact in the invitation you received. Be sure to dress just as you did for the first meeting, such as wearing a mens suit or appropriate, contemporary dress unless its a casual work environment. Make sure your outfit is clean, well pressed, and fits well. And keep your accessories to a minimum. Your second interview will likely differ from your first in a couple of ways. With some companies, you will meet different people than you did in the first interview. At other firms, you will meet with the same group, but the focus of the interview will be different. Instead of questions about your work experience and performance, they may focus instead on culture and personality to see if youre a good fit for the office. There are a number of different interview types, and it is possible that after your initial interview, the potential employer will use a different type to see how you handle different interview situations. If your first interview was a one-on-one, your second may be a group interview. Group interviews are either a group of colleagues interviewing you or a group of interviewees being interviewed together. Either way, the hiring team will be looking at how you interact with a group, so practice your listening skills and body language as well. Remember, this is very much a two-way conversation. While they are interviewing you, you should also be evaluating them as a potential employer. A second interview is a great opportunity to get more insight into what your coworkers are like, what the corporate culture is like, and how your potential boss operates.   Be prepared to ask questions about not only your role but your future team and the company as a whole. While giving you valuable insight, it also demonstrates your interest and passion for the work.

Business, Economy Booming in Cincinnati Business, Economy Booming in Cincinnati Cincinnati and the Northern Kentucky area are currently enjoying notable economic growth. In April the Greater Cincinnati metro area saw a 6.17% increase in job openings. Other metros with significant job increases during that period include  Pittsburgh, PA (5.27%) and Seattle-Tacoma, WA (4.94%). Of the top 25 largest metro areas in the US, only  Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN, saw a dip in job openings (-0.29%) over this period. “The Simply Hired Employment Outlook shows steady gains in job listings over the last quarter,” said James Beriker, President and CEO of Simply Hired. “New grads are benefiting from a stronger job market than in years past with nearly 20% more full-time entry-level jobs available this year as compared to last.” In Cincinnati the good economic news has been accompanied by significant increases in tourism in the area. A series of  studies  on travel and tourism in the region has found that ,Visitors… spent $4.4 billion in 2013, a 5.1% increase over 2012, including $629 million on hotels, $898 million on retail and $1.4 billion on food and beverage.  The region hosted 24.1 million visitors in 2013, an increase of 4% over 2012. 90% percent of visitors came for leisure and 40% stayed at least one night. But growth in the greater Cincinnati area isn’t due solely to tourism. The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland has  suggested  that this trend will continue, due to  proposed expansions by major companies in the area. The bank also noted, “Unemployment in the area now stands at 4.5%, nearly a point lower than the national average. Wages are also growing faster than the rest of Ohio and other nearby metros. Wages are poised to reach an average of $840 a week â€" a level not seen since 2007.” The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland has  suggested  this trend will continue, due to  proposed expansions by major companies in the area. According to Simply Hireds data, the top growing industries during April in the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area were  financial services, healthcare and manufacturing. Move naturally and connect with natureThe majority of people in the world commute by public transport and cars on a daily basis, even though it’s one of the main activities that rob us of our happiness on a daily basis.But the happiest people in the world opt for walking and cycling instead.For example, each day, approximately 50 percent of residents in Copenhagen, Denmark, cycle about 932,00 miles to and from work and school.Not only does this help them to stay healthy and save money, but it also a lleviates the anxiety and stress that reduces happiness.You’re also more likely to connect with nature if you walk or cycle regularly, than commute by public transport or cars.In addition, Buettner suggests that people who live near water- a lake, river or ocean- are about 10 percent more likely to be happy than people who don’t. Live in a community that supports your well-beingArguably the most important factor that drives our happiness is community.Buettner argues that a strong community is the key to living a long, healthy and happy life: “You can’t do it on your own. Short-term goals for new businesses should be “building a very small community that understands who you are and selling to them and improving the trust you have.” John recommends initially selling “a very small scope of products, not trying to spread yourself too thin. Once you know your customer really well, then you’ll be able to duplicate that on a much larger scale.”He knows from his own mistakes not to bite off more than he can chew too soon: “When I first started [with FUBU], like any designer, I wanted to make all colors to match all sneakers,” he told Ladders.But customers didn’t want every color: “Now knowing what I know, 60% of your sales are always going to be black, no matter what … Now I know that my customer loved an extra large, so I would have not made small, and I know the most they’re going to pay is $29 for a screen-printed shirt, and the most they’ll pay is $39 for an embroidered shirt. I didn’t know all that initially and I had a large, large lin e … and I had a whole bunch of inventory that I was sitting on I couldn’t get rid of because I decided to over-commit.”E-commerce means more information and controlJohn says that the fundamental difference between brick and mortar and e-commerce is how much intel you can get on your customers and how you can scale.“You hit way more people with e-commerce even if you have an existing retail shop and your analytics often are a little more accurate because a retail shop, when a person comes in, you don’t necessarily know if they’re buying it for themselves, their husband, for their wife, or it’s a special occasion. And unless you have a form where they can enter the data, when they leave, you don’t know where they went. You don’t know how to maybe get them back.”“When you are servicing on a digital platform such as eBay you can find who your customers are, you know their analytics, their demographics, you can email them, there are ways to over-service them… You can hit people all over the world instead of necessarily in one small community.”FUBU got into e-commerce between 1999 and 2000. “We saw that it was a way to empower ourselves a little bit more. We did have 27 retail shops but if we were selling purely to a retailer, then if the retailer decided to discount it, we were powerless if the retailer decided to merchandise it next to a competitor or if they decided to just keep it in the back and not even bring it out because, whatever they weren’t paying attention, and again, we didn’t know, we didn’t have any data at all because they’re not going to give us the data on who’s exactly shopping. They didn’t even know the data on who was shopping at Macy’s, JCPenney’s. We wanted to be a little bit more in control of our destiny, so we started to sell online.”Don’t give your product to your product away to friends“Well, listen, you give 10 t-shirts away to your friends or family … Grandma’s always gonna come bac k no matter how disgusting that shirt is and say ‘Oh baby, everybody at my job loves it’ even though grandma and the people at the job hate it. But they don’t want to hurt your feelings.“But you get somebody who has a lot of different options and who are taking their hard-earned money out of their pockets and handing it to you â€" there’s proof of concept, that’s why you see on ‘Shark Tank.’ We always say, ‘What are your sales?’ And you don’t have to be selling $1 million, you can be selling something that is $10. But if I found out that you sold 50 of them in two hours because you decided to stand out on the corner and sell them, you have a million dollar deal ahead of you … Because if you don’t know who your customer is, then you’re taking my money and you’re using it as tuition to find out who your customer is so, that’s why you shouldn’t give away anything, you gotta sell it first to see if you have a real viable product.Tell a storySmall busine sses make it easy and attractive for people to buy from them if they create a narrative, John told Ladders.“How are small businesses telling their story?” he asked. “People can buy from anybody and they want to know why they’re buying into your story.” Many entrepreneurs, he said, have created their product out of fulfilling a need or a void in the market. “So people want to support brands and products like that. One of my top companies on ‘Shark Tank’ even taught me a lesson. They’re a company called Bombas Socks I think they were doing like $800,000 in business when they first started, and now I think they’re gonna do about $100 million annually. And the reason why I feel this so great is, first of all, the product is king, the sock is really amazing, but more importantly, I think, every sock they sell, they give away a pair to the homeless because they know the homeless have a challenge caring for their feet and getting clean socks.”That kind of give-back is important to consumers today and is an attractive story to support. “I found that today, the consumer, they want to know that every single time they purchase something, they’re giving to a cause or something near and dear to them, or even not near and dear to them â€" just something they know is going to help others so at the end of the year, they look at their 400 purchases and they say ‘Listen, I’ve donated money towards stopping human trafficking, I’ve donated money towards saving animals, clean water, and homelessness.’“No matter who you are, you need to tell a story and you need to build your community around that story, and people will support you more whether it’s from a charitable side … or whether you’re making a really amazing product but you’re not selling it at a high cost because you feel that a family needs to be able to afford this product. Retailers have to tell a story and then people will die to support them.
